MP Discusses Student's Concerns |

Southport's MP John Pugh met students at KGV college this week to discuss some of the concerns raised in his recent questionnaire. Dr Pugh's wide-ranging survey covered topics such global warming, immigration, crime, and perceptions of bias in the media, and the MP today returned to the college to present the results.

Low earners hit by income tax changes |

Changes introduced by Gordon Brown when he was chancellor last year but coming into effect this month will mean that the starting rate at which people pay tax has effectively doubled to 20p in the pound. The Treasury has admitted that one in five households will be worse off, but what is remarkable is that households with the lowest earners (particularly those earning under £10000) will lose out most - a situation that Southport's MP says "almost defies belief".

Four London Boroughs, with a population of just 824,000, have a greater influence on quango boards than the entire north of England - this is just one of the findings of a new report which a local MP describes as "deeply worrying". The report, conducted by the New Local Government Network (NLGN), examined the makeup of one of the least understood aspects of British Politics today - quangos.
