John Pugh, Liberal Democrat MP for Southport, raised cheers and laughter in the House of Commons today (Wednesday). Speaking during Prime Minister's Questions, Mr Pugh asked Gordon Brown whether he would be promoting British Holidays for British (and non-British) people. The question was posed in reference to the announcement by Pontins that it will create 2000 news jobs and invest £50million in seaside resorts - £10million of it in Southport alone. It also followed a week of difficulty for the Prime Minister, during which his 'British Jobs for British Workers' slogan was employed by striking workers across the country. Several references to the now-infamous slogan had already been made during PMQs, most especially by leader of the opposition David Cameron and Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg. The Prime Minister replied to Mr Pugh's question by saying that he agreed with Mr Pugh about the importance of the Pontins investment, and re-iterated the Government's commitment to the £4million grant promised to Southport as part of the seaside towns regeneration package. |
