New Report Highlights Welfare 'Bounce' |
|
Thursday, 28 February 2008 |
A new report issued today has discovered that some 40% of the people receiving Jobseeker's Allowance who secure employment will be back on welfare within six months. The report, issued by the Common's Public Accounts Select Committee, claims that hundreds of thousands of people are finding it increasingly difficult to find the enduring jobs which can raise them and their families out of poverty - of the 2.4 million Jobseekers Allowance claims made each year, over two-thirds are now repeat claims. Liberal Democrat MP for Southport John Pugh - a long-standing member of
the Committee issuing the report - said this morning that such people
were "falling through the gaps" in government policy.

MP Attacks Polyclinic Proposals |
|
Thursday, 21 February 2008 |
Announcements in the last few days that the government prefers the model of a polyclinic to the traditional GP surgery have been criticised by local MP John Pugh.
John, who met with local GP representatives on Friday to discuss problems faced by Southport GPs refers to the advent of the polyclinic as 'the industrialisation of health care' commenting "We can't have the local GP surgery going the same way as the local
shop, the local garage and the local post office. The idea of a family
doctor familiar with families' medical history and aware of all aspects
of their health is surely preferable to a supermarket approach to
healthcare."

Southport MP John Pugh met with Post Office chiefs to discuss proposed closures in the town last Friday - and left the meeting with the distinct impression that they hadn't done their homework. Dr Pugh, along with Liberal Democrat councillor Sue McGuire, were told at the meeting that the Post Office plans to close two of it's branches in the town; both the Manor Road branch in Churchtown and the branch on Forest Road are scheduled for the axe.

Nick Clegg: Restoring trust in our political system |
|
Friday, 04 January 2008 |
Liberal Democrat leader Nick Clegg writes exclusively for www.libdems.org.uk on how to reopen the
political system and revitalise public trust:
Shortly after I was
elected as Leader of the Liberal Democrats, the Prime Minister phoned me to
offer his congratulations and express his wish that we should work together on
the issues that unite our country. Similarly, shortly before I was elected as
Lib Dem Leader, the Conservative Leader made a posting on his website seeking
support from the Liberal Democrats to build a "progressive alliance". His
approach was a little less personal and a bit preemptive, but I shall not hold
that against him.
