 There are just under 600 bingo clubs in the UK - 60 having closed in the last two years. The situation for many of the others is bleak. While factors such as the smoking ban have played a part in the decline, the main concern is taxation.  The Leader of the House (Harriet Harman) was urged in the House of Commons today by Southport's MP to put pressure on the Department of Health to make statement about the safety implications of the government policy of centralising services and what the MP called 'the' gutting' of District Hospitals.
