John Pugh Tells Energy Company Not to Pull Plug on Pensioners
Friday, 19 June 2009
ImageSouthport's Lib Dem MP, John Pugh, has written to EDF energy demanding that the company withdraw threats to cut off 73 pensioners’ electricity.

EDF supplies electricity to Mill House Lodge, an Ainsdale-based development of 73 ‘sheltered accommodation’ flats, the residents of which hold long leases on their individual flats and who pay their own utility bills.

However, Mill House Lodge is managed by Exclusive Property Management Ltd, who have been presented by EDF with an electricity bill of £23,346.62. As individual residents pay for their own electricity usage, this staggering sum relates only to electricity used in communal areas. Exclusive Property Management Ltd have already paid about £3000 of this amount, but the often inconsistent and difficult to understand EDF bills have led to regular payments not being made – and now EDF is threatening to cut off power to Mill House Lodge.

If Mill House Lodge is disconnected, the pensioners living in the 73 sheltered accommodation flats will also lose their power – despite having paid their own utility bills, as well as an annual ground rent to Exclusive Property Management Ltd intended to cover such things as communal electricity.

John Pugh has this week written to EDF Energy, asking them not to cut off power to Mill House Lodge.

Commenting on the matter, Dr Pugh said: “This is a dispute between EDF and Exclusive Property Management – not the residents who live in Mill House Lodge. It would be terrible and wrong if pensioners living in Ainsdale had their power cut off, despite having paid all their bills and being at no fault whatsoever.”

He continued: “Exclusive Property Management have assured me that they are keen to rectify the dispute as soon as possible, in the best interests of the residents. In the meantime, I have written to EDF asking that they do not cut off power to Mill House Lodge, and have also sought assurances that no action will be taken to disconnect residents.”
