Southport's MP, John Pugh, is urging Northern Rail to ensure that Southport enjoys the benefits of new investment in its train fleet, calling it a "priority concern for many constituents".
At present, Southport residents travelling with Northern Rail must endure some of the oldest, dilapidated and uncomfortable trains in the country. Most trains are over 25 years old, and some (the "Sprinter" class) are made from reconstituted bus parts. Dr Pugh has repeatedly called for replacement and refurbishment of these trains in Parliament, re-emphasising the need to invest in Northern railways. Now, managing Director of Northern Rail Heidi Mottram has confirmed that 90 trains on the Northern network have been internally refurbished, and 220 re-painted. Furthermore, she also disclosed that Northern Rail is in discussions with the Department for Transport regarding the details of new and cascaded trains which are set to increase Northern Rail’s fleet by about 25%. Dr Pugh has written to Ms Mottram, urging her to ensure that Southport is a direct beneficiary of increased investment and improved trains on the Northern network. Commenting, he said: “Southport residents travelling with Northern Rail at present must endure some of the worst trains in the country. Securing better trains for Southport has been a long-standing principle of mine, and is a priority concern for many constituents.” He continued: “New investment in the Northern Rail network is an opportunity to ensure that Southport passengers finally receive a train service of 21st Century standards.” Related articles: TRAINS AND BOATS AND THIN EXCUSES (John Pugh Blog, Feb, 2009)Roger's travels by train (BBC Face 2 Face, Oct 2007) |
