Southport's MP John Pugh has signed on to support the second annual British Tourism Week - and is predicting a bright future for the town as "England's Classic Resort". British Tourism Week runs from the 10th to the 18th of March, and aims to raise the profile of Britain's £85 billion visitor economy. This years campaign, which will be launched by HRH the Prince of Wales, aims to draw national awareness to the size, value, and importance of the tourism industry - the nations fifth biggest. Dr Pugh has pledged to do his bit by making the case for Southport as a tourist destination when he meets a leading US broadcaster next Friday. Several broadcasters will be visiting Royal Birkdale next week to check on preparations for the 2008 Open, and Southport's MP believes the event could help further establish the town as a premier golfing destination: "We need to get the message out about Southport" said the MP this morning. "Royal Birkdale is obviously famous the world over, but there are several other top-class courses in and around the town as well - 3 of which were this week announced as qualifying courses for the 2012 Open. With top-class facilities like these, and the opening of new 5 star accommodation to go with them, Southport is a golfers paradise." Dr Pugh promised to make this point in next weeks meeting, and is encouraged that the media are already taking an interest in the town. "Golfers around the world are keen to know more about 'the town behind the open', and we now have a range of top-class facilities to show them. The message is clear: Southport is on the way up." |
