MP To Ask Supermarkets to Boost Recyling
Monday, 22 October 2007
With pressure on supermarkets to take back packaging M.P. John Pugh is to write to all the local supermarkets to see if they will subsidise additional plastic recycling facilities.

John Pugh comments: At the moment all the supermarkets are doing is giving house room to council financed facilities but there are three reasons why  I believe they can and should do more."

packaging is so wasteful
"Firstly most of the packaging in the bins is of goods bought in the supermarket. Secondly they are making huge, huge profits from sales to the local community and thirdly effective recycling facilities will bring people to their store and add to customer visits.

"I will be approaching each major supermarket chain store to see what they can do. Positive moves would be to ask their trolley staff to keep sites tidy and encourage the public to compact and separate. Offering to compact or purchase a compactor on site to crush the plastic and stop overspill would be an asset as would making a contribution to have extra capacity and faster replacement of recycling skips.

"None of this would make even the tiniest dent in some of their profits and would show true community and corporate responsibility.

"It could be argued that the council tax payer or the consumer should fund the entire recycling system but the supermarkets couldn't exist without plastic packaging and should make a greater community contribution to its disposal, rather than have the citizen pick up the whole tab for landfill and recycling costs. Just taking back plastic bags is not enough as they are negligible in terms of bulk."
