MP helps mark new chapter for more than 150 Southport staff |

The skills of 151 Southport staff were transferred to a leading national health authority on Monday, April 1. Southport's MP John Pugh was on hand at Smedley Hydro in Birkdale to cut the commemorative ribbon marking the transfer, and show his support for the town's biggest employer.

Low earners hit by income tax changes |

Changes introduced by Gordon Brown when he was chancellor last year but coming into effect this month will mean that the starting rate at which people pay tax has effectively doubled to 20p in the pound. The Treasury has admitted that one in five households will be worse off, but what is remarkable is that households with the lowest earners (particularly those earning under £10000) will lose out most - a situation that Southport's MP says "almost defies belief".

MP "Shocked" By BSI U-Turn Rumour |

Liberal Democrat MP for Southport John Pugh says he is "shocked" by recent rumours surrounding The British Standards Institute's stance on Microsofts embattled OOXML format. Source close to the BSI have suggested that the institute is set to approve the format as an international standard - a turnaround from their previous position which Dr Pugh describes as "highly surprising if true".
