PRESSURE ON POST OFFICES MOUNTS

With more closures in prospect and many Crown Offices going into W.H.Smith , John Pugh has warned that 2008 could be another tough year for the post office. This follows concerns last week that the Department of Work and Pensions were not going to release benefits to Post Office Customers until hours before Christmas.

Southport People Sight Breakthrough

Local MP John Pugh today welcomed a decision which could see hundreds of local residents given access to a drug previously denied to them by the NHS. Lucentis is a drug used to treat wet age-related macular degeneration - the leading cause of sight loss in the UK. Previous restrictions as to who was eligible to receive it meant 20,000 people in the UK would have been condemned to blindness each year.

HEALTH EFFECTS OF CHEAP ALCOHOL

Local MP John Pugh warned of the increasing dangers of alcohol binge drinking in a parliamentary debate on the 'Health Effects of Cheap Alcohol.'  This follows shocking recent reports showing that the whole Sefton area has a huge problem of alcohol abuse.

He told parliament: "This Christmas, in my town, as surely in every constituency, there will be the usual sad litany of alcoholic excess of one kind or another: anti-social behaviour, fights, road accidents and possibly deaths."

The MP put much of the blame on a hard-drinking culture which he argued was having a corrosive effect with women adopting male drinking habits. He called for a cultural change in our attitudes but also criticised supermarkets for selling alcohol as a loss leader.

"Many young people get into a habit of what is called 'pre-loading'- drinking supermarket booze before going out    The drinks themselves are often higher in alcohol content than they used to be . People aren't actually drinking more in pubs than they used to."

MP Promised Improvements Regarding GP Appointments

As a result of a wide ranging survey about residents health concerns, as well as direct contact with several local people, MP John Pugh has sought assurances from Sefton PCT that issues surrounding patients ability to book appointments with their local GP are being addressed.

John Pugh MP Backs National Campaign For Warm Homes

John Pugh MP is backing a national campaign that aims to highlight the plight of households who are concerned about being able to heat their homes to adequate levels this winter.

The Warm Homes Campaign is the annual winter campaign organised by fuel poverty charity National Energy Action (NEA). It runs through November and is organised in association with Eaga, and supported by the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (in England).
