MPs on the Select Committee for Communities and Local Government have begun on a major enquiry into rubbish collection, the different regimes and their effects. Topics to be included: -
- The ways in which local authorities collect and measure waste.
- Collection methods: the contribution made to waste minimisation by the timing, frequency and type of collection in both urban and rural areas and in areas characterised by differing housing types, such as flats.

LOCAL ROAD SCHEME DEBATED IN PARLIAMENT |

Last week (8th May) in Parliament's Westminster Hall, in an example of cross party co-operation, John Pugh joined forces with West Lancs MP Rosie Cooper, to push for funding for the Ormskirk By-Pass which would improve access to Southport, reduce journey time between the hospitals and take pressure of Ormskirk town centre
The scheme is relatively low down in the current regional priority list for which over £700m of government funding is available but is too expensive for Lancashire to fund alone.

"Let's get physical" - Pugh |

John Pugh today backed a British Heart Foundation (BHF) poster campaign urging people over 50 to be physically active for the sake of their health.
The MP gave the thumbs up to the heart charity's 30-a -ay campaign, after hearing the facts laid bare by BHF at a House of Commons event. BHF statistics reveal someone in the UK dies every 15 minutes as a direct result of physical inactivity, so John is encouraging adults in his area to be active for 30 minutes every day.

MP Backs Drive to Stamp out Child Poverty |

John Pugh attended the parliamentary launch of Save the Children's UK child poverty exhibition at the Upper Waiting Hall, House of Commons,. The photography exhibition, "Missing Pieces", by photojournalist Anna Kari, captures the harsh reality of life for the 3.4 million children living below the poverty line in the UK today.

John Pugh has welcomed the news that Southport Tax Office is to remain though with some uncertainities as to the nature of its workload. The news comes as something of a relief to the 40 staff (approx) working there. It was feared that the whole unit would go under a nationwide scheme to make savings and cut civil servants jobs.
