With more closures in prospect and many Crown Offices going into W.H.Smith , John Pugh has warned that 2008 could be another tough year for the post office. This follows concerns last week that the Department of Work and Pensions were not going to release benefits to Post Office Customers until hours before Christmas. The MP has been told that our local Crown Office will not be re-sited under the deal with W.H. Smith. However he points out that nothing is safe and that Post Office is under intense pressure to cut costs. However its not all doom and gloom. Some local post olffices, according to John, are embracing the E-bay age and acquiring new customers as more and more goods are sent by courier or through the post. "This is a rapidly growing trade but I am sure what many people would like is the ability to have internet goods left at the local office when they are out of work. People are never particularly happy having goods left in the porch or having to go up to the depot at Kew. I am trying to find examples of best practice that we can imitate so that local post offices can benefit." |
