Ironically in the week that John Pugh had delivered a final warning to United Utilities that the ground could open up in Shellfield Rd, Marshside, it did only yards away from his home in Birkdale. A hole appeared out of nowhere in Alma Rd, Birkdale, deep enough for an adult to stand up in. The police were called immediately as the road surface appeared to be sitting on thin air. "The cause is probably similar to what is happening in Shellfield Rd where four suspicious dips are ringed off.. Residents I have spoken to there are worried that the sandy ground under the road has been swept into fractured sewers and away. When a heavy vehicle goes over it is likely to fall into the abyss." Amazingly though some motorists were seen to move cones around the Alma Rd hole to by pass it forcing engineers to park vehicles across the road ! "If they saw the depth of the hole they would not dream of doing it. The road was at that point in reality a thin bridge made of tarmac. "Given the huge operation United Utilities have had in town and the millions spent I am a loss to understand why we still get these problems and I am asking for an urgent meeting with them. It's important that the residents in Southport have a clear picture of what is going on" |
